"Science best serves society when it is open to debate and discussion - when scientists are free to speak without the fear of losing their jobs, their funding, commercial contracts, or their political support. This is the rock on which the concept of academic freedom rests.  However, since the 1990's science in New Zealand has become increasingly commercialised and politicised. This has the effect of closing down debate and discussion."  This warning comes from Dr Doug Edmeades, ONZM, Agriculture Personality of the Year 2012, in Country Wide magazine, in which he quotes two recent examples.
